Training Program Announced

CASA of the Southern Tier has several seats open in its February 2007 training session. The program will prepare volunteers to become a court appointed special advocate, volunteers who advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children in Family Court. CASA of the Southern Tier serves children in Steuben, Schuyler, and Chemung counties.

“CASA volunteers fill a critical need in our community,” said Amy Miller, executive director of CASA of the Southern Tier. “CASA volunteers are ordinary people who care about kids. They come from all backgrounds. Many work full time. Some are students or retired. Most CASA volunteers work on one case at a time, and no legal expertise is required.”

Volunteers follow a child’s case as it moves through Family Court, researching the case to learn everything they can about the child’s special situation. The CASA volunteer then makes recommendations to the judge on what’s best for the child’s future.
